My cross stitch background: my aunt embroiders, thankfully, and she guided me through a stamped cross stitch when I was little. I chose to do this one on my own.
However, I found first of all that the needle was missing; thank goodness I bought a second kit, otherwise I would have had to go and get a new needle. The instructions were okay for the most part; they show you all of the stitches, but their version of doing the french knot is not very good - I had my aunt show me how to do that. In addition, the charcoal thread kept breaking on me while I was backstitching the outline, so I didn't have enough to finish the french knots.
Overall it's decent enough for beginners, but probably a good idea to have someone on hand who knows how to embroider or do similar needlecraft on hand. Comparing this to other cross stitch kits for beginners, I'd say this one is roughly average at best - but at least it's cheap.
